I consistently posted to [email protected] with the goal of getting to 1,000 subscribers in the hopes that a large subscriber base would encourage people to show off their outfits.

But I'm not holding my breath since there just aren't enough people into fashion on Lemmy. Now that I've reached my goal (yay) I'm moving on to other things 🫑

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 month ago

1.01K subscribers, pretty damn cool, but yeah a bit disappointing to see just two people running the show.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 month ago

Congrats on hitting your goal!

I do like fashion.

I always thought "streetwear" implied a certain kind of style that is not my cup of tea, and I am very uncomfortable posting a picture myself online, even if I censor my face out.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah, streetwear is fashion rooted in youth subcultures. Another somewhat active fashion community is [email protected]

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

Curiosity made me check if [email protected] existed and it does but it is not very activeβ€”I'd imagine any not-man looking for fashion communities on the Fediverse might not bite on male fashion advice lol. Now I am also wondering if just plain "fashion advice" exists, or anything for nonbinary people. Back when I was on Reddit I wasn't aware of such a subreddit, I was only aware of malefashionadvice and femalefashionadvice.

I'll be honest, I am not even qualified to advise on fashion. I am sure I am not colorblind but things like "oh, that color washes you out" or "that color flatters you" have never been something I am able to see. I feel I'm missing a lot of knowledge like this, but I get by because none of my clothes cause me trouble in daily lifeβ€”no pain, unexpected restricted movement, or general discomfort; people compliment my outfits sometimes; and I'm happy with what I'm wearing.

Also, good luck with the community and I hope you find posters, as someone who is also one of the primary posters in some communities I'm in and hopes others would interact sometime.

Reddit had (has 😝) several fashion subs. Male Fashion was popular for all genders (they grew beyond their name). r/Streetwear (of which I was a former mod πŸ₯²) had 4.6 million subscribers. There were several other subs, some general, some niche.

I don't buy into that whole Color Me Beautiful stuff. You should wear what you like and not feel constrained because of your skin's undertones or whatnot smh.

Appreciate the well wishes! Hope your communities flourish as well!

If I knew you here, I'd have invited you to join [email protected]. I feel like fashion is still one of the biggest segments on Reddit that could have migrated.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Didn't even realize there was another streetwear community 🀝 I don't see any activity on that entire instance tho. Is it defederated with lemmy.world?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

The instance is federated,.but the communities were quiet or only used for mirroring content from Reddit.

If you know more mods or people who want to migrate, I'd love to help.

Sounds like my kind of fashion :)

I can get upvotes, but getting other people to post/comment/crosspost is nearly impossible lol

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

It is the nature of things. Most users just post something the occasional time they find something to post.

Going about finding something to post is the unusual behaviour. I've had users come and go in my communities, and even repeat posters still do so sporadically.

I did notice a lot of your communities don't have icons or banners. That definitely makes a difference when people look for where to share something. No icon makes the community seem dead or like it never got started.

An icon instantly sets a community apart in the results, both in search and the create post page. The sub and active counts are the second thing people look at, after that, I suspect.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Thanks, you're right I need to make icons and banners, I'm a terrible artist though lol

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 weeks ago

Oftentimes using just some random image that’s slightly related is better than nothing

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I look for things to post on some of the communities I follow. Unfortunately I cannot commit to doing this regularly for all communities I follow.

Also, your icon need not be made by you, so even if your art skills are as mediocre as mine it is fine! Grab some Creative Commons thing, slap it on your community, and attribute it. That is what [email protected] did.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

Did you mean to reply to @[email protected]?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

[email protected] has been roaring, thanks to the tsunami of posts by @[email protected]. @[email protected], @[email protected], and a couple others have been backing them up.

[email protected] has been barelling along. Interestingly, the mod and frequent poster @[email protected] is going back to school this week and thus will not be posting as much. Will be interesting to see if others take over.

[email protected] - Kind of sad to see @[email protected] stop posting, but I get it.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 weeks ago

Ayyy! :D

I didn't realize I'd been contributing that much there, glad to have helped it thrive! Thanks for the mention ^^

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 weeks ago

Great for [email protected] !

I haven't followed up on the streetwear new, I'll check

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago

Quite happy with [email protected] lately

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

!bicycle_[email protected] is doing pretty damn good, considering the fact that the english speaking general cycling communities with way more subscribers see so little traffic. I guess after the season it will die down quite a bit, but season's still on. Yes, season's still on, so strap some luggage on your bike and get going.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Just had a look, pretty crazy participation levels in the german speaking cycling community [email protected] . I reckon it's the most active cycling community on lemmy, even though it also only has like ten times less subscribers than the english ones.

Feddit .org keeps delivering

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I thought that [email protected] started to show some signs of life a couple of weeks ago, with good comments on some posts of mine and even got a first post from someone other than me. Alas, summer break broke the momentum.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Sorry to hear πŸ˜•

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Started a new specialized community focused on monitors on lemme.ee to avoid centralisation with LW.

https://lemm.ee/c/monitors

It's going fine for a new community.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 weeks ago

Nice, good luck!

Also, FYI there is [email protected] rather than [email protected]

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Wish Lemmy Scheduler worked with Mbin, because I found a lot of good posts for [email protected] that would best be spaced out to avoid spamming and to keep the community active for a decent period of time.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago

Worst case scenario, you can set up (yet another) alt and use it with Lemmy Scheduler

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 weeks ago

I'm happy with them.

Apologies for the OT: I sent you a DM some weeks ago asking if you'd be interested in running the Fediverser services with your instance, to make it as a possible destination for redditors migrating via https://fediverser.network.
