Shiro Kasamatsu (1898 - 1991) Japanese Woodblock Print Bird Cage, 1957

All images and text from here

Above, detail

Shiro Kasamatsu - Born in Tokyo, Shiro began studying art at a young age with the painter Kaburagi Kiyokata. He completed his first woodblock designs for Watanabe Shozaburo in 1919 after the publisher saw his paintings on exhibit. Shiro designed shin-hanga prints for Watanabe for many years, becoming well known for his romantic landscapes of famous landmarks and his scenes of traditional Japanese life. From 1952 to 1960, he created more than one hundred woodblock designs for the Kyoto publisher Unsodo. He also experimented with sosaku hanga or creative prints starting in the late 1950s, carving and printing his own designs. Shiro is regarded as one of the top shin-hanga woodblock print artists in Japan.

I really like these modern ukiyo-e/modern 'horror' mash up prints, the older wood blocks are also great fun...

Cheers, I had fun selecting them ๐Ÿ˜€

Me too!

The tags say 'old car'

[โ€“] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

The accompanying tags are 'car' and 'old car' so I'm guessing it's either the door handle or possibly bonnet/hood icon....I did think it was an insect when I first saw it, love the green!

I've not found any photos of the woodblock, however I did find a video, unfortunately it's via instagram and I can't verify it (don't have an account, and don't want one)

I did find a photo of one of his other prints (I'll be doing a mega post in the future of this series)

edit also a link to his mural street art which is really interesting (but not printmaking)

Unfortunately they haven't posted one on the website, I'll have a look around and see if I can find one

I honestly thought it was David Tennant, sporting his David Ten-inch

[โ€“] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

Ha! It was completely coincidental, but I do love the Aztec influence and art too....there's another Mexican printmaker I want to post, but was struggling to remember his name, hopefully I'll remember before the end of the week- his work is seriously impressive

Also I'm planning a 'Halloween Special' for both printmaking and collage so there should be a few skeletons for you to checkout

Glad you liked the post ๐Ÿ‘
