If you google this question, “where does fentanyl come from?” You get a results page filled with “China” and “Mexico”. I have a suspicion that the fentanyl “pouring over our southern border” narrative is mostly BS and that it’s coming from inside the house, but can anybody point me towards the facts? Thank you

Lemmy had issues with people attacking the site by posting CSAM so hexbear doesn't show externally hosted images to prevent that.

Your expectations are too high for the military that has lost like a dozen nuclear warheads around the world.

But if they don't exist how can we sneer at the poors for their poverty while also simultaneously claiming that they're privileged and pampered as a dismissal of their criticisms?

Which one has concentration camps for Muslim minorities and bully their neighbours? Which one arrests and send their citizens to concentration camps for criticising their government?

Not China, that's just made up nonsense. The US does have concentration camps along its souther border to detain the people fleeing conditions the US created with it's ultraviolence against Latin America though, and does hold Muslim prisoners without trial in a torture camp that they illegally operate on Cuban soil, for example.

Which one has been bombing or invading some country somewhere every single day for the last 40 years and which one hasn't bombed or invaded anybody over the same time period?

Which one has the largest prison population in the world despite having far fewer people? Which one has cops kill almost 1,000 people every year? Which one has 800 military bases around the world to enforce its hegemony on other countries? Which one was founded on slavery and genocide? Which one used nuclear weapons on civilians, which one maintains a nuclear first strike policy to this day? Which one has hundreds of thousands of people sleeping in the streets?

Youve made not a single argument as to why or how China is a "greater evil" than the US, you deserve nothing but mockery in response to such a nonsensical assertion. And it's telling that you have to reach for ridiculous claims about your interlocutors who you know nothing about instead of reaching for any actual argument, which is what you would do if you had one. On some level I think you actually know the US is worse or you would have attempted to argue the point instead of making stuff up about me.

Thanks. I'll have to look deeper into the whole thing but yall have given me some good points of consideration.

So what do we make then of the Soviets and Russians admitting later on that it was the NKVD? This is a blind spot for me but just scanning Wikipedia (I know) it seems like Gorbachev era USSR admitted to the killings being ordered by NKVD. What would their motivation be for saying that if it weren't true?

You're a clown, lick my nuts.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 1 year ago (16 children)

Did they not do it? I was under the impression that Katyn massacre was carried out by the Soviets and could be considered a war crime but that doesn't merit any comparison with what the Germans did and that drawing a false equivalence between them is basically Nazi apologia.

but no one from democratic countries would want to align to countries with you know... authoritarian.

The US is way more authoritarian than China, probably the most authoritarian country in the world by any reasonable metric, so I don't see your point.

Not trying to make the US flawless, it's clear they aren't, it's just that they're lesser evil than China.

A fundamentally ridiculous assertion, the US is many orders of magnitude more evil.

A group of senior military officers has gone on national television in Gabon saying they have seized power because elections held over the weekend were not credible.

The officers, appearing on Gabon 24 in the early hours of Wednesday morning, said they had cancelled the elections, dissolved all state institutions and closed the country’s borders.

They said they represented all security and defence forces of Gabon.

The announcement came shortly after the state election body said President Ali Bongo Ondimba had won a third term in office in Saturday’s disputed elections.

“In the name of the Gabonese people … we have decided to defend the peace by putting an end to the current regime,” the officers said.

The Gabonese Election Centre said Bongo had secured 64.27 percent of the vote compared with 30.77 percent for his main challenger Albert Ondo Ossa, after a process beset by delays.

Al Jazeera’s Catherine Soi, reporting from Kenya, said that “there are lots of uncertainties” surrounding the military action.

“There is a lot of tension as well. They [military leaders] are claiming that the government has not been respecting the will of the Gabonese people for so many years and they say that has to change,” said Soi.

On Saturday, the opposition camp said the election was a “fraud orchestrated by Ali Bongo and his supporters” after the internet was cut and a curfew imposed. French media outlets France 24, RFI and TV5 Monde were also banned, accused of “a lack of objectivity and balance … in connection with the current general elections”, the government said.

“We also know that the internet is still shut down. It was shut down over the weekend and curfew was imposed,” Soi said. “So, people are very afraid.”

“It is very hard for people in Gabon to access the information that they need to know what is happening,” she added.

Bongo was the candidate for the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), the party founded by his father, Omar Bongo, who led Gabon from 1967 to 2009. After his death, his son, then the defence minister, took his place as president and has been in power ever since.

“We have no idea where President Bongo is. The military did not say where the president is. Things are moving very fast,” reported Soi.

Tensions had been running high amid Saturday’s vote with the opposition pushing for change and an end to the Bongo family’s dominance of Gabon.

I use the site through my phone's browser, which is how I've always used it. Recently I'm being logged out almost every time I refresh or go to a new page either by clicking a link or using the back button. Is this a known issue that's being worked out?

Edit: we have been helped and so grateful for the generosity of the users who helped us. Thank you comrades, I love you all, and I hope to be back on my feet soon to be able to help others here the way I've been helped today.

I hate asking, but I'm just starting new job tomorrow which I'm happy to have but I won't get my first paycheck for two weeks, and I need help to get food and some things my son will need for school between now and then. If anybody can spare anything, even a little bit we would be so grateful. Thanks in advance to anybody who can help.

Anything that's not super intense or fast paced (not looking for a shooter game or anything where I've got to be quick, something more chill. Or maybe I'll just start a new run of Disco Elysium again

Edit: thanks so much guys I just woke up to a ton of notifications and there's a lot of great stuff in this thread to try out!

Went to donate blood plasma today to get some money and they said something had expired because it’s been a while, so they have to process me as a new donor, and they don’t have the staff for that today lol. So anyway I’ve got negative $30 in my bank account after I tried making a loan payment and it hit me with NSF fee . It’s so very frustrating never having anything.
