It’s scary that the Unity debacle is not just happening in games but a very real threat not just in digital and app space but in real life.

It can happen in medicine, housing, even the food we eat if the trend of subscriptions and lock ins continue.

Despite this, a global concerted effort towards Open Source tech is still not happening.

In Unity for example, there is a push to transition to Unreal but less so for Godot. We see this happening with reddit too. And soon maybe we’ll see it in real life. What’s stopping our hotels and landlords from charging us everytime we open doors.

We see this in the rampant mandatory tips. Where everyone is automatically charged per order.

It’s scary and frustrating at the same time that there may not be a clear remedy for this. As the world shifts to subscriptions and services, do we truly own anything anymore?

Because libre office is not compatible with many others. You can open it sure but there’s no guarantee that opening .doc or .docx will have broken formatting. Not good for those in the academia or workplace where formatting are strictly enforce.

Same. @squizzy, I don't like microblogging in general either. I was raised in the golden era of forums (the days of phpBB and vBulletin). My twitter account hasn't been touched for years now.

tweXit does have a nice ring to it. Made me laugh 😂

Was tinkering with userchrome and sidebery this day and it got me thinking how others has their firefox customized. Let's bring the fun back to firefox. Share your screenshots. :)

So far, I tried Tabliss, Momentum and currently toying with Taskade. But the "unmodded" one is nice, too as it's faster. I'm wondering if anyone here has some opinions.

It's not just lemmy that's benefiting from Elon Musk.

As an iOS user and long time Firefox user (never switched to chrome in my life) I feel jealous. But one can only hope that we too in the APPLE walled garden won't be left behind. Though I understand that it would be a long shot. :(

I know this has been discussed a lot but so far there is no TRUE cross platform ones that work and syncs for free.

The closest is Joplin but that’s laggy and bloated.

Anyone knows of an app that

  • Syncs
  • Works on iOS Windows and Linux
  • Free or affordable

Some apps I tried

  • Bear app - my main so far but my macbook is aging so I am planning on getting a linux notebook and I have a windows desktop at home. I managed to stay with this the longest but only because I have an iphone, ipad and mac. But now, I want to try windows or linux as well.

  • Notion- laggy. Bonus: free with education account, (I have one and it works but I don’t like its interface and database nature. It’s not as simple to just type and go.

  • OneNote- laggy. At least for me. And definitely not open sourced.

  • Standard Notes- good features but very expensive for what it offers. Especially if you want to use sync.

  • Obsidian- not technically Open source but very popular. The sync is expensive though and does not even give you storage. It utilizes the space already on your device. Feels like a rip off.

  • Evernote- I like its price proposition better than Obsidian but its bloated. And I don’t like its ethics.

Anyone else has ideas? :)

The hype!!! :) I’m so excited :)

Any browser really. I missed the browser wars of old where everyone is free to use and defend their browsers.

True, but with the war on Ukraine, Russia no longer has the capacity or is no longer perceived as a country capable of harboring authoritarian outlaws.

Most dictators/strongmen eventually come crawling to china.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Genuine question, can ICC and its allies sanction us then? If so how is harboring one criminal a better trade? Right on time with disputes with China, too. Tsk tsk.

Voting for B. A- color and background clashes. C- feels too simple and plain.

You may be right. Being on lemmy tends to skew perspectives a little bit.

Yeah but then that would be supporting and enabling Google’s standards.

In fairness. i don’t consider myself tech adept, I don’t know how to run a server but I know the importance of privacy and open source. Maybe take it as a good thing that these are being openly talked about here, otherwise the mistakes of reddit will just be repeated. Supporting closed source is a ticking time bomb.

Companies can and will betray you in the name of profit.

On to privacy and security, they ARE important. You have no idea how many people lost money in their banks or have to deal with lengthy lawsuits and procedures just to get their life back after someone impersonated them by stealing their data or ID.

In our area, OTP scams are very rampant. And people constantly fall victim to random calls asking for OTP and other details ; then have their banks withdrawn huge amount of money precisely because the issue of security and privacy aren’t openly being talked about.

Please don’t take it as a negative, but a good thing that these types of things are being discussed.

As a popular quote (paraphrased) says “those who fail to learn the past is doomed to constantly repeat it.”

We don’t want another reddit or twitter.

People are still healing from reddit’s bad decisions. Let them mourn. Let them be angry, let them go through the stages of grief in their own pace.

With the number of people concerned about privacy, it is a wonder why chrome is even popular.

Reminds me so much of tacky dating sites. Pay and be able to message! Ughh

I miss the glory days of .99 cent apps. :(

I only hope they won’t touch youtube Premium, it’s the only thing that makes youtube barely tolerable.
