The owner is gambling that Trump wins the election and pardons himself. Then the fuhrer will owe his friend a favor for the help.

This is an important part of it. The other part is the fact that success in politics is very hard without money, and most rich people aren't progressives.

Actually, it is. The owner decided to match the wage increase to dodge the controversy, though it seems the question of whether the law actually covers Panera will need to be settled in court for a definitive answer.

Also they might have awkward political opinions, such as whether the wars they were sent to fight were wise and just.

These are similar reasons to why right-wingers spend so much energy protecting "the unborn" and then forget about them at the very instant of birth. It's easy to care about people who aren't around to actually demand anything of you.

We'll see how it works out, I guess. I voted against it, personally, because it adds a bunch of extra responsibilities to existing programs without any extra long-term funding to go along with it. I'm concerned that stretching limited resources even thinner may not be the best strategy.

Lol, no one's putting a gun to people's heads to make them act bigoted. If your response to being accused of racism is "Oh, yeah? I'll show you racism!" then you're just showing your true colors.

Well, of course he is. He's evil, not crazy. He knows he would lose that war very badly.

Right, a smaller country can never successfully resist a larger one. That's why Vietnam has been under US occupation (or was it French? I can never remember for some reason) all these years since Ho Cho Minh wisely surrendered to spare his people's lives.

Even if he can't formally quit, he could effectively quit by just refusing to meet the obligations of the treaty. Who would stop him?

Remember: the cruelty is the point. No amount of logical argument about the uselessness of executions for deterring crime, or about how often innocent people are convicted of serious crimes or especially appeals to basic human mercy will sway a dedicated conservative from their desire to inflict suffering on those they deem lesser than themselves.
