I see there is a fediverse equivalent of Goodreads (Bookwyrm), but is there a fediverse equivalent of Letterboxd / icheckmovies / trakt.tv?

I am hating all the ADs on trakt.tv. I was thinking of moving to icheckmovies or letterboxd and then wondered if there was a fediverse equivalent. I looked around but found nothing so far.

Even if there's no fediverse equivalent, an open source or even just a moderately privacy respecting one would be nice.

Hey, I'm a current trackt user and I'm curious what you don't like about trackt?

Don't get me wrong, its pretry good all around. Its privacy policy isn't so bad either, as it seems it only shares your watch history with advertisers and I'm willing to give them that. Its just that if there's an alternative that doesn't do any if that I'd take it.

Also, Trakt seems to be one of the first big ones of its kind, so I fear that it could get bought off in the future and become an actual privacy nightmare.

Like last.fm?

Haven't used it myself and it seems to be in relatively early development, but Movary might be worth a look then.

Edit: An alternative that is not open source, but still privacy respecting and a bit more featureful might be rate.house:

Privacy Policy Summary

  • We do not give your data to anyone.
  • You have full control of your data.

See previous discussion here when someone asked about a Fediverse equivalent of Discogs.

The state of play, as far as I am concerned, based on talking about it over there, chewing the idea over and doing some digging:

  • This has been proposed a few years back and nothing came of it but it feels like the idea is gaining momentum.
  • The developers of BookWyrm definitely think that it is perfectly possible to take their code and adapt it for films to make a Fediverse IMDb/Trakt equivalent (FilmWyrm? MovieWyrm?) but they don't have the time to do it.
  • Rather than keep reinventing the wheel ("What about a Fediverse Discogs?", "What about a Fediverse comic book database?", etc) it might be an idea to first take BookWyrm and make it more modular, so it would then be easier for people to spin off their own projects: DiscWyrm, ComicsWyrm, MovieWyrm, ActionFigureWyrm, AnimeWyrm, etc. I proposed calling it GeneralWyrm.

edit: updating link as this had more discussion.

Are they still open source? I remember having my eye on them for a bit, but then the github link started becoming harder to find on their site until it finally disappeared, so I kinda assumed they changed directions or something.

Just use letterboxd, it's great. And for tv shows you can use serializd.

What is your biggest use case for it? (Tracking your watch, reading reviews, following reviewers, etc)
