From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

After nuking my old install, I am in need of a hostname. Top comment chooses it.

Hostnames can be up to 64 characters long in Linux.

This seems to be the most popular one, though I can't use it in the way its written here, because it will fuck up DNS. I'll substitute the dots with dashes and then it should work.

Hostnames can be up to 64 characters long in Linux.

I was scrolling to find something good like this

Most shells usually default to a truncated version of the hostname that only uses the hostname up to the first dot. Of course one can change that by setting the PS1 env var and using (in case of bash) \H instead of \h.

With a username like this, I'd give all my hosts and servers moon names. Like the moons of Jupiter (Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto).

This is genius! Why didn't I think if that before?

Most people here suggested meme names, but that's actually a really great idea! And the names are pretty beautiful on top of that. I hope OP chooses this despite it being far from the top comment.

I wonder, what characters are allowed? $0 would be interesting, or even the fork-bomb classic.

I've always been partial to "wintermute". Not many people will get that reference these days.
