I wish we held our current veterans in such reverence as the ones who never made it home.

Teachers too.

Well the ones who never made it back only require a plaque. The ones who do require healthcare and social services.

Also they might have awkward political opinions, such as whether the wars they were sent to fight were wise and just.

These are similar reasons to why right-wingers spend so much energy protecting "the unborn" and then forget about them at the very instant of birth. It's easy to care about people who aren't around to actually demand anything of you.
