what ghoul failed at their job so badly that I can still sit idly at a traffic light for 40 seconds without watching an ad about forgettable-mayo-movie-3984438974239029 or detergent?

It may seem counterintuitive to suggest that, on (fake) Labor Day, (LETS GO MAY DAY) we devote our attention to a subset of the American population who should not be working, or at least not working in jobs that are entirely inappropriate for them. Children.

According to the Department of Labor, the number of minors involved in documented child labor violations (not including the ones that are never reported) increased a mind-boggling 472% between 2015 and 2023, with teenagers working late night shifts, too many hours and working in hazardous environments.

It's not hard to speculate that, as labor shortages have worsened in this country, employers are turning to those under 18 to fill those gaps.

It's not supposed to be this way.

The cops totally shot some of the kids themselves right? Also they made sure their own kids were immediately ushered out and then just sat around and didn't do shit. Also they told people to yell for help, which just made the shooter target those particular ppl right?

Anything come out of this? I haven't been following.

“When we requested that we stop training because someone had died … we were told to 'shut the f— up, sit there and keep doing your job' as if nothing happened,” the guard member told TPR. “We had made a request for chest seals, trauma supplies like tourniquets — stuff like that. … We were told that there was 'no need for those supplies at this time.' So they were denied. … This is immediately following a servicemember being shot in the back and dying.”

Fascism is an insufficient term, as it denies the intimacy between liberal and far right forces. In this week’s newsletter, we present ten theses to understand this ‘intimate embrace’ and the rise of this far right of a special type.

Also, Guerilla History pod companion episode to go with the article.

What really struck me was Thesis Five: the far right of a special type provides a partial answer to the loneliness epidemic that comes with advanced capitalist alienation. It doesn't build real community or friendships or relationships, it's more like everyone being in the same fandom. They wear signifier merchandise and signal to each other with specialized language and all consume the same significant cultural products, but they don't actually build real community.

Instead they build ephemeral pseudo-anonymous online communities and temporary community through mass mobilization (rallies, marches, etc). They often don't know each other by their real names, or anything about each other's families, or their tastes outside of what they use to signal how antiwoke they are to each other.

But this is the closest thing millions of people have to community, even while the epidemic of loneliness continues untreated.

Building community is a radical act.
